Anna Sui Eyewear: Rock 'n' Roll Romance From Detroit to New York
Share
Anna Sui built her fashion house on a very specific mix — vintage nostalgia, girlish sweetness, and a streak of rock-and-roll rebellion, all filtered through a genuinely encyclopedic knowledge of design history. That same "good girl/bad girl" duality, as Sui herself has described it, defines her eyewear collection just as much as her runway shows.
A Detroit girl's dream of New York
Anna Sui was born in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of second-generation Chinese-American parents who met while studying at the Sorbonne in Paris — her father in engineering, her mother in painting. Sui has described her own path into fashion as something close to a lifelong, almost improbable dream: "How could this young girl from the suburbs of Detroit become a success in New York? It was always that dream."
She launched her first collection in New York City in 1981, building a reputation over the following decade for vintage-inspired, contemporary design layered with fanciful, feminine embellishments and a hint of rock 'n' roll edge. Sui has held two runway shows every season at New York Fashion Week nearly every year since 1991, with the sole exception of Spring/Summer 2002, held in her own Garment District studio in the wake of the September 11 attacks. Her work has earned significant industry recognition, including being named one of the "Top 5 Fashion Icons of the Decade" for 2000–2010, and receiving the CFDA's Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009 — putting her in the company of honorees including Yves Saint Laurent, Giorgio Armani, and Ralph Lauren.
A brand built on eclectic inspiration
What sets Sui apart is the sheer range of references she pulls into a single collection — Victorian cowboys, Andy Warhol superstars, Finnish textile prints, Nordic mythology, Chinese heritage — all filtered through a design sensibility that stays recognizably her own regardless of the source material. That same restless curiosity has fueled decades of collaborations, including partnerships with The Frye Company, Opening Ceremony, Vans, and Macy's — the retailer that gave Sui her first major break early in her career, and one she returned to collaborate with more than 35 years later.
Eyewear enters the collection: 2009
Anna Sui launched her eyewear line, Anna Sui Vision, in 2009 through a licensing partnership with Mondottica Limited, which handled the manufacture and distribution of the brand's spectacles and sunglasses. The debut collection consisted of 27 optical frames and six sunglasses styles, translating Sui's fashion sensibility directly into eyewear: acetate and metal frames finished with a distinctive universal bridge, in colorways emphasizing soft burgundy, purple, and rose alongside tortoiseshell laminates and the designer's signature "purple tomato" hue.
Sui described her own philosophy behind the collection simply: "There's always a sweet feminine, girly aspect, a touch of nostalgia, some trendiness, rock-and-roll coolness and ambiguity... All these facets go into my designs or they don't look like Anna Sui." In 2012, the eyewear line expanded further through a collaboration between Mondottica and Fellow Earthlings to produce sunglasses specifically for Sui's fashion show presentations.
A design language built on signature motifs
Anna Sui eyewear draws directly from the same design vocabulary found across the designer's fashion and accessories lines — most notably her signature rosebud detail, her favorite butterfly motif, and a classic fretwork pattern that recurs throughout the collection. Sui has long been known for her own personal eyewear style, regularly incorporating sunglasses and optical frames into her looks both on and off the runway. The collection spans full-rim and semi-rimless styles across a wide range of silhouettes — wayfarers, contemporary rectangles, ovals, squares, and rounded-edge shapes — offered in both chunky, thick-rimmed plastic for a bold statement and thinner metal frames made of rust-resistant Monel for a more understated look.
Where the brand stands today
Anna Sui eyewear continues to be produced and distributed through Mondottica, remaining a recognizable presence in the designer eyewear market for shoppers drawn to the brand's particular mix of vintage romance and playful detail. The collection stays true to the same guiding principle Sui has applied across every product category she's touched: every piece has to genuinely "personify the world of Anna Sui," or it doesn't carry her name.
